Abstract:

Corporate credit rating: BBB-/Watch Neg/— If UAL Corp.'s bid to acquire US Airways Group Inc., with AMR Corp. buying some of the acquired assets, is abandoned, AMR and its American Airlines Inc. unit would avoid increased competition from an enlarged UAL. Standard&Poor's will either affirm its ratings on AMR and American and remove them from CreditWatch, where they were placed with negative implications on Jan. 10, 2001, or downgrade the ratings if AMR's financial performance and outlook are judged to have deteriorated sufficiently due to the adverse industry environment and challenges related to its recent acquisition of the assets of bankrupt Trans World Airlines Inc.
