The ratings on AMR Corp. and unit American Airlines Inc. were placed on CreditWatch with negative implications Jan. 10, 2001, following announcement of American's agreements to acquire assets of bankrupt Trans World Airlines Inc. (TWA) and certain assets of US Airways Inc. The TWA transaction has been approved by that airline's bankruptcy court and the Department of Justice, with a final court hearing and closing expected April 6. Regulatory approval of the proposed US Airways transaction, and of UAL Corp.'s acquisition of the remainder of US Airways, is less certain. The two transactions would provide American with a geographically well-placed hub in St. Louis and strengthen the company's position at key East Coast airports, which would help offset competitive damage
