NEW YORK (Standard&Poor's CreditWire) May 18, 2001— Standard&Poor's today assigned preliminary ratings to American Airlines Inc.'s various classes of pass-through certificates series 2001-1 (see list below). Final ratings will be assigned upon completion of the review of legal documentation. The certificates are secured by equipment notes issued by American or by owner trusts in connection with leveraged leases to American. The notes are secured debt by 32 McDonnell Douglas MD83, 10 Boeing 737-823, and four Boeing 777-223ER passenger jet aircraft delivered between May 1997 and March 2001. The MD83's were originally delivered to Trans World Airlines Inc. (TWA), whose assets were acquired out of bankruptcy proceedings by American. The leases were amended and assigned by TWA
