Tropical Storm Hilary is highly unusual because it is the first tropical storm to cross into California from Mexico since 1997. While the storm eventually weakened to a tropical cyclone, it?s still one of the most severe tropical storms to land in California in recent history. About 44,000 of SCE?s customers lost power, and the city of Palm Springs declared an emergency due to unprecedented rainfall and flooding. While almost all of SCE?s customers had power by the next day, we believe this unusual event again signifies the range of climate change-related risk affected utilities face.
