On Jan. 7-8, 2025, several wildfires occurred across multiple counties around the Los Angeles area, exacerbated by high winds, and prompting Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency. The Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires have collectively burned over 5,500 acres according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). In particular, the Palisades fire has resulted in nearly 3,000 acres burned, two fatalities, and over 1,000 structures damaged or destroyed. More than 10,000 structures remain threatened by the fire, and thousands have been evacuated because of the wildfire?s severity. The wildfires in and around the service territory of Edison International?s subsidiary, Southern California Edison (SCE), reflect SCE?s highly challenging operating environment because of climate change.
