Abstract:

On April 1, 2021, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) favor to relax certain media ownership rules (FCC v. Prometheus Radio Project), including those which prohibited companies from: Owning more than one top-four rated television station in a single market; Owning a television station and radio station in a particular market; and Owning a daily newspaper and a television or radio station in the same market. The FCC had loosened these rules in a 2017 order, but it was overturned by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 2019.
