Standard&Poor's today has affirmed its ratings of AMR Corp. and unit American Airlines Inc., but warned that ratings would very likely be placed on CreditWatch with negative implications if American's pilots strike (see table of ratings below). Rated debt totals about $10.3 billion. American will cease flight operations if its pilots strike and furlough the great majority of its employees. Management has stated that a 60 day strike would lower pretax earnings by $1.5 billion, including both direct strike losses and an undisclosed follow-on impact from lost market share and related effects. Standard&Poor's estimates that the daily impact during the strike would be around $20 million, implying absolute losses of over $15 million per day. Equally
