About This Report

Abstract:

This weeks IFO and PMI surveys pointed in different directions with the latest IFO hinting at a growing impact of Brexit on German new orders. Overall, we do expect the slowdown in UK investment to have a modest impact on the German manufacturing sector, but even taking a cautious view of growth in the second half still sees the German economy growing at 1.8% this year. Offsetting any Brexit-related slowdown, service sector activity continues to hold up. Export growth, too, belies the earlier fears of a Chinese-inspired slowdown in the external environment. Overall therefore, we continue to see solid, if unspectacular growth being combined with steadily rising inflation. We continue to think this will rule out any extension to QE beyond March 2017.
