About This Report

Abstract:

Luxembourg fell into in technical recession in H1, with revised national accounts showing that GDP contracted 0.3% in Q1 and then 0.9% in Q2. But this was caused by technical rather than cyclical factors. Ahead of the VAT hike in January 2015, households brought forward expenditure to late-2014, leading to a particularly strong 2.8% quarterly rise in GDP in Q4 2014 but then a fall in consumer demand in early 2015. Despite this, we think a return to growth is likely in H2, with GDP seen rising 3.6% in 2015 overall, albeit somewhat slower than the downwardly-revised 4.1% growth posted in 2014. We still expect slower growth in the coming years, but for 2016 we have raised our forecast to 3.1% (from 2.5% in July) in part due to stronger investment.
