About This Report

Abstract:

After two years of difficult negotiations, theP5 + 1 world powers reached a comprehensive agreement with Iran on 14 July, restricting Irans nuclear programme in exchange for a sweeping reversal ofinternational sanctions (including all US and EU oil, economic and financialones and most UN ones). But there remain some hurdles before implementation day. These include: a US Congress vote on 17 September; Tehran answering questionsfrom the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by 15 October; and the IAEAverifying that Iran is in compliance with the deal around the turn of the year. Our forecast had already assumed a successful outcome to the nuclear negotiations,so for 2015/16 we still expect GDP growth to slow to 2.7%. While oil GDP willrise by 6% this year on the back of higher oil output, non-oil GDP will rise byjust 2%, with the impact of a 33% drop in the oil price offsetting improvingeconomic confidence. But the removal of sanctions and modestly higher oilprices are seen lifting GDP growth to 4.1% in 2016/17.
