About This Report

Abstract:

The economy's resilience continues to be tested, with leading indicators pointing to weakness in Q3. Growth is expected to moderate from 3.9% in H1 2016 to below 3% in the second half, for an overall growth rate of 3.1% in 2016. The government has pledged to spend its way out of the slowdown, raising concerns that the loss of investment grade status last month may weaken fiscal discipline.Meanwhile, the lira has fallen to record lows over fears that institutional quality is being eroded. This left the central bank little choice but to pause its easing cycle at its last meeting, as a weaker currency jeopardises its efforts to curb inflation.
