About This Report

Abstract:

Initial assessments that the sharp appreciation in the Franc a year ago would push Switzerland into a recession were too pessimistic. In part this reflected the fact that the CHF lost some ground against both the euro and the US$ through 2015. However, the move to an even more overvalued exchange rate did slow growth to well below that of the Eurozone and the patchy latest indicators suggest that the economy has yet to move into a clear recovery phase. But provided the other advanced economies continue to improve then Swiss growth should resume this year, averaging 1% in 2016 and 1.9% in 2017. However, the recent global market turmoil suggests that the downside risks have increased.
