About This Report

Abstract:

GDP growth rose to an eight-year high of 4.7% in the 2015/16 fiscal year (July-June) despite heavy losses in the crop sector. Output data continue to point to accelerating growth, with large-scale manufacturing in the first nine months of the 2015/16 fiscal year up 4.7% compared with 2.8% a year earlier. In addition, the IMF programme has remained on track, with another tranche of some US$500m approved in June, but the facility expires in September and is thought unlikely to be renewed. After the pick-up in growth in 2015/16 (from 4% in 2014/15), we expect a further acceleration to 5% in 2016/17.Activity remains hampered by power shortages, but there are plans to remedy the situation. And growth prospects will also be helped in the next few years as investment picks up, boosted by the US$46bn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Power and road projects are getting under way, together with hydroelectric plans, despite some of the plans proving contentious. As a result, GDP growth is seen rising to about 5.5% a year in 2018 and 2019.
