About This Report

Abstract:

Following an unexpected downward revision to Q1 data and a slightly tighter than expected 2017 budget, we have lowered our GDP growth forecasts to 2.0% in 2016 and 2.6% in 2017, down from 2.3% and 2.7% last month. The 0.2% q/q fall in Q2 GDP was expected, but the revision of Q1 data to show only a 0.5% quarterly rise instead of the previously estimated 0.8% was an unwelcome surprise.Inflation rose to 2.73% in August, up from 2.65% in July. We expect inflation to continue picking up in H2 2016 and breach the 3% mid-point of the target range before the end of the year as energy price inflation rises further. But, importantly, inflation is expected to stay very close to the 3% target throughout the next three years. We remain of the view that Banxico will deliver another 25bp rate rise after the US Fed has moved. However, the central bank could choose to leave rates on hold until next year if the peso were to appreciate following a Clinton victory in the US elections, or the Fed were to postpone its rate hike until December.
