About This Report

Abstract:

The Bank of Japan adopted a Negative Interest Rate policy at the end of January in its latest effort to hit the inflation target. Despite an initial fall in the yen/rise in equities this was quickly more than reversed, overshadowed by the repercussions of increasing turmoil in global financial markets. But the downward shift in the yield curve is likely to persist, especially if rates are pushed further down from the current -0.1%. GDP fell by 0.35% in Q4, led by a large drop in consumption. Business investment was the one bright spot. We now expect the economy to grow by 0.8% this year, down from 1.2% previously. With inflation set to stay close to zero more monetary stimulus is likely in coming months.
