About This Report

Abstract:

Q3 GDP contracted by 0.2% on the quarter, putting the economy back into recession just a year after the last one. There was a surprisingly strong export performance in Q3 and private consumption rebounded. But overall domestic demand contracted due to an inventory correction and another sizeable fall in business investment (despite strong profits). The outlook is for a return to modest growth in Q4, with consumption, exports and investment all increasing. We expect 0.5% GDP growth this year and 1.5% in 2016. The Bank of Japan is likely to maintain its current pace of asset purchases well into 2016 but a modest fiscal boost is expected soon. However, inflation is set to stay below 1% through much of 2016.
