About This Report

Abstract:

The Greek economy grew by 0.8% on the quarter in Q3, its fastest since the new adjustment programme was agreed last summer. Funds from the second tranche of programme financing have allowed the government to begin clearing its payments arrears, which in turn has pumped much-needed liquidity into the economy. As a result, consumption expanded for the first time this year, rising 0.3% in Q3. We expect GDP growth of 0.4% in 2016 (compared with the 0.5% decline we had anticipated prior to the Q3 result), after a 0.3% contraction in 2015. The pace of growth is then forecast to pick up to 1.5% in 2017, despite an expected renewed decline in domestic demand as fiscal tightening continues, but the outlook remains highly vulnerable to further setbacks.
