About This Report

Abstract:

Q2 national accounts show that GDP rose by just 0.5% on the quarter, slightly below forecast. The strongest component of GDP growth was net exports, up 14.7%. But private consumption grew by less than GDP, recording growth of just 0.2%, while fixed investment fell 0.9%.As a result of the weaker Q2, we have lowered our 2016 growth forecast to 1% (from 1.2%), with expansion then seen at 1.6% in 2017 and around 1.8% a year in 2018-20. The labour market continues to strengthen with unemployment at just 4.2% in July, and we expect the labour market's underlying strength to continue, underpinning consumption growth.
