About This Report

Abstract:

Activity in the service sector has suffered following the tragic terrorist events in Brussels in March. However, the economic impact should mostly be temporary, weighing on consumption at the beginning of Q2. More than security threats, household spending will be constrained by low earnings growth this year including the governments wage freeze. But beyond this, economic fundamentals remain reasonably strong, with businesses benefitting from government measures to reduce labour costs and net trade set to boost GDP growth in 2016 for the first time since 2013 on the back of the weak euro and improving Eurozone demand. Overall, we continue to see growth at 1.4% this year unchanged from 2015 accelerating to 1.7% in 2017-19.
