Global basic metals production slowed sharply in value added terms in 2015 and weakness extended into early 2016. However, new stimulus measures in China have boosted steel demand, driven down inventory levels and pushed prices upwards. Non-ferrous metal markets are also benefitting from this stimulus. We expect basic metals output to contract in 2016, but grow by 1.6% in 2017.
