About This Report

Abstract:

Summary

Desalination is referred to as the process through which pure water is obtained from saline water. A number of large thermal desalination plants are now put together with power production systems. One reason is the simultaneous rise of water and power needs such as in Middle Eastern countries where rising population growth is leading to an increase in the demand for water and electricity. Another reason is valorisation of heat reject. Electrical power production systems involve an efficiency range of 35-50%. This low efficiency rate occurs because much of the heat is declined in the atmosphere as low grade heat. As thermal desalination units can utilize low grade heat, the heat rejected can be recovered and provide value through freshwater production downstream a power generation system and hence the entire energy cycle is optimized.

This combination of power along with water production offers the most economical results and hence is mainly utilized in Middle East countries. These projects are called Independent Water and Power Production (IWPP) projects.
