Abstract:

Due to increased generation from both hydropower and non-hydropower renewables, we have revised our forecasts for thermal power generation since last quarter. We now expect thermal generation to amount to ---.-TWh in ----, as opposed to our previous forecasts of ---.-TWh. ...We do not forecast any new projects to come online, though we do expect some increased output from existing plants. After the People s Party failed to establish a coalition government after the second national elections in June ----, we have a more muted outlook on the future growth aspects of non-hydropower renewables in Spain. We now expect growth to remain below -.- on average per annum over our ---year forecast period, as the country will struggle to devise and establish any expansion strategy for non-hydropower renewable electricity. ...The Spanish government announced in July ---- that it is planning to hold an auction for up to -GW of renewables capacity by the end of the year. However, due to no government being formed after two elections, and a lack of further details and evidence on progress, we do not factor this into our forecasts.

...BMI View: Investment into new capacity for the Spanish power sector will be muted over our ---year forecast period due to the lack of policy direction, as no government has been formed yet after two elections. Increases in thermal power generation will come from mothballed gas-fired capacity coming back online, while coal power will decline due to stringent EU emissions targets and a declining coal- mining sector. ...BMI View: Investment into new capacity for the Spanish power sector will be muted over our ---year forecast period due to the lack of policy direction, as no government has been formed yet after two elections.
