Abstract:

As a mature power market, where a growing focus on power efficiency will constrain growth in electricity demand, New Zealand will see only limited growth in total power generation over our ---year forecast. In the coming decade, changes in power generating capacity and generation will primarily depend on the need to address potential imbalances between demand and supply following the retirement of aging thermal capacity, coupled with the government commitment to reducing the role of carbon dioxide-emitting power sources in its electricity mix and increasing that of renewable energy technologies. ...As a mature power market, where a growing focus on power efficiency will constrain growth in electricity demand, New Zealand will see only limited growth in total power generation over our ---year forecast. The lack of progress on several planned projects mean we have made a downwards revision to our forecasts for New Zealand s total power generating capacity, which we expect to grow at an annual average rate of less than -.- between ---- and ----, from -,---MW to approximately --,---MW. ...The planned removal of thermal power capacity, specifically coal-fired power, in the next three years will undermine energy security in New Zealand, as outlined by the national grid operator Transpower. In November ----, Transpower reported that there will be an energy security risk following the retirement of the last ---MW of coal-fired capacity at the Huntly power station (which is planned for end-----), unless new power capacity is built before ----, with winter energy margins falling below security standards.

...We are maintaining our forecasts for New Zealand s power sector this quarter. Total generation is forecast to increase from --.-TWh in ---- to --.-TWh in ----. ...Total generation is forecast to increase from --.-TWh in ---- to --.-TWh in ----. Over half of generation is sourced from hydropower and renewables will see its share of generation increase from --.- to --.- . Over half of generation is sourced from hydropower and renewables will see its share of generation increase from --.- to --.- . ...Mercury s energy is now ---.- sourced from renewables - a mix of hydropower (nine stations) and geothermal (five stations). Trustpower has put forward proposals to demerger and create two independent publicly listed companies: Tilt Renewables will hold Australian and New Zealand wind farms and wind and solar development projects and New Trustpower which will operate the company s hydropower assets in

...The closure of coal-fired power plants confirms our view (informed by the latest electricity demand and generation scenarios produced by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment) that some new or refurbished gas-fired capacity will have to be brought online over our ---year forecast period to ensure stability across New Zealand s power system amid significant capacity retirements. The Huntley point coal-fired power plant is due to be retired in ----, though there is pressure on utility Genesis to extend operations with recent reports indicating the plant could be operational until ----. ...
