About This Report

Abstract:

German engineering firm Siemens shipped parts for a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), which would be installed at the Beni Suef plant by mid-September ----, according to reports in August that year. This was the first of -- HRSG which would be shipped for the Beni Suef, New Capital and Burullus plants (all three are ----MW thermal facilities). ...The economic crisis and associated bailout will necessitate painful economic reforms, which could undermine economic growth and investment in infrastructure. This reinforces our caution about the prospects for continued strong growth in power generation beyond ---- (ie, beyond the completion of projects where the bulk of investment has been committed and construction is close to completion). The government unveiled increases in electricity prices in August ----, of between -- and -- , which would apply retroactively from July that year, with the price hike variations linked to consumption. The move came as the government was locked in negotiations with the IMF over the USD--bn bailout package. Whilst politically sensitive, the move represented an important means of rationalising pricing in the power sector.

...BMI View: Egypt urgently needs more power capacity as the energy infrastructure seeks to cope with surging demand, but the situation should ease at least partially over the period --------- due to gas fired thermal projects coming online. A return of relative political stability, as well as the introduction of reforms, have resulted in investments being made in the power sector, although the government s fiscal position is increasingly stretched, as evidenced by a USD--bn bailout agreed in principle with the IMF in August, which indicates limited room for investment manoeuvre, beyond the completion of projects that have already reached critical mass. ...BMI View: Egypt urgently needs more power capacity as the energy infrastructure seeks to cope with surging demand, but the situation should ease at least partially over the period --------- due to gas fired thermal projects coming online. ...Substantial natural gas resources provide the basis for increased generating capacity over the long term. A number of international companies are making investments through the development of thermal and renewable power projects. ...
