Abstract:

NEW YORK (Standard&Poor's) July 2, 2002--Standard&Poor's said today that Highmark Inc. and UPMC Health System's tentative contract renewal will have no immediate effect on the ratings on Highmark. A press release that Highmark issued jointly with UPMC on June 26, 2002, stated that the companies have reached an agreement in principle for the renewal of commercial and SecurityBlue hospital contracts that expired on June 30, 2002. This tentative agreement represents a positive development for Highmark, as UPMC had disclosed in its public bond filing on March 18, 2002, that it might not renew its hospital contracts with Highmark. The finalization of this renewal with UPMC will continue to support Highmark's market leadership in western Pennsylvania. UPMC
