In the first six months of 2023, GPW rose 8.7% year over year, building on last year's strong price increases in most lines of business and new business writings. In 2022, Fairfax had a strong combined ratio of 94.9% (including corporate expenses and excluding run-off; 94.7% as reported), despite elevated natural catastrophe losses and the Russia-Ukraine conflict-related losses. Similarly, in the first six months of 2023, Fairfax produced strong underwriting results with a reported undiscounted combined ratio of 93.9%. Fairfax continues to adjust its investment mix to take advantage of rising interest rates and deploy its cash and cash equivalents, and short-term investments, totaling $7.09 billion at the end of second quarter 2023.
