About This Report

Abstract:

This report does not constitute a rating action. A state cash injection will give Chinese megabanks more flexibility to lend while boosting capital buffers. These institutions--the country's six largest lenders--have experienced more interest margin squeeze than peers, due to their role in policy-favored lending and in backing economic growth. The injection also addresses increased capital requirements stemming from the megabanks' designation as global systemically important banks (G-SIBs). The Chinese government said it would inject renminbi (RMB) 300 billion into the megabanks this year. We believe this is part of a push--announced in September 2024--to bolster the capital of megabanks. Four of the six banks were recapitalized in 2025 and we expect the remaining two-- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
