About This Report

Abstract:

This report does not constitute a rating action. TOKYO (S&P Global Ratings) Jan. 19, 2026--Mitsubishi Corp.'s large investment in North American shale gas will limit its financial capacity. The deal is large enough for us to expect a significant deterioration in financial health indicators. Mitsubishi Corp. (A/Stable/A-1) announced on Jan. 16, 2026, that it will acquire Aethon III LLC, Aethon United LP, and related companies (Aethon) involved in the North American shale gas business for approximately $5.2 billion (approximately ¥820 billion). We believe this investment will significantly reduce credit headroom for our current rating on Mitsubishi Corp. The total acquisition cost (including loans) for Aethon is approximately ¥1.2 trillion. This is large relative to the company's non-current assets of ¥12.7
