Whirlpool Corp.'s (BBB+/Negative/A-2) announcement that it is recalling 1.8 million microwave ovens and exhaust-fan hoods due to product safety concerns will not impact Standard&Poor's current ratings or outlook on the company. The company took a $300 million charge in the third quarter fiscal 2001 for the recall. While financial flexibility will be somewhat reduced, Standard&Poor's expects that Whirlpool's sizable cash balances and discretionary cash flow will enable the company to finance the recall, pay dividends in line with historical levels, and achieve its capital-spending goals.
