Abstract:

Standard&Poor's said today that Office Depot Inc.'s (BBB-/Stable/--) announcement that it has authorized the repurchase of up to $50 million shares of common stock annually has no immediate impact on the company's credit rating or outlook. The repurchased shares would be used to meet the company's near-term requirements for its stock option and other benefits plans. The company's ratings reflect satisfactory financial flexibility and moderate leverage as it continues to implement initiatives to help stabilize declining operations in recent years. Standard&Poor's does not expect to see significant operating improvements from Office Depot until 2002 as a result of the weakening U.S. economy and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
