NEW YORK (Standard&Poor's) Nov. 14, 2003—Standard&Poor's Ratings Services said today that its ratings and outlook on Exxon Mobil Corp. (AAA/Stable/A-1+) would remain unchanged following an $11.9 billion judgment against the company in Alabama District Court. Standard&Poor's expects that the ultimate award for punitive damages will likely total a more reasonable multiple of the $63 million in compensatory damages awarded by the jury. Nevertheless, Standard&Poor's will monitor the case, which will include an evidentiary hearing regarding the reasonableness of the award and possible appeals to the Alabama Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court.
