The results reflected generally flat spread revenue and higher provisioning for loan losses offset by strength in mortgage results, capital markets activity and continued focus on controlling costs. We observe that bank earnings remain depressed from historical levels due to persistently low interest rates and the diminution of cost-cutting options. However, we do not expect earnings to materially improve over the near-term given sustained low rates, modest economic growth, political uncertainties and softness in key economies globally.
