The improvements reflected improved capital markets, seasonally higher fee income, still benign credit costs, and contained expenses. Despite the improvement, bank earnings remain depressed from historical levels. We do not expect earnings to materially improve over the near-term given low rates, modest economic growth, global and political uncertainties, and higher future credit costs. Noninterest Income to the Rescue: Most banks reported strong noninterest income growth on a linked-quarter basis, driven by stronger trading results, and higher mortgage production income. The large mortgage originators all reported growth in originations and applications, with WFC's pipeline the highest in three years; however, MSR volatility and hedging results impacted overall mortgage revenues for some.
