| Abstract: | A number of reports are out this week to keep markets busy. The inflation reports will help markets gauge how long the Fed can stay in neutral. The retail sales report will determine whether consumers are still shopping at the mall. Monday: The Treasury budget will be watched for improvements in the "other deficit". A much-better-than-expected figure suggests that an upbeat fiscal-year budget is in the cards and therefore a more limited financing need than initially projected. We expect a $145.0 billion surplus for April, thanks to checks written out to Uncle Sam. Tuesday: April retails sales should be down 0.2%. Auto sales should be a drag on the month. We expect the ex-autos component to rise a modest 0.3%. |
