Abstract:Modern Moldova, between the Prut and Dnestr rivers, was detached in 1812 from its western half, the Romanian region of the same name; the two were reunited during 1918-40. Relations since then have often been fraught, with Chisinau fearing lest 'Greater Romanian' ambitions extinguish its statehood, and Bucharest tending to treat its neighbour as a 'younger brother'.
