A maturing of the synthetic f abric market will help slow the decline in cotton fa brics. Production of twill cotton fabr ic is projected to c ontract 2.6 percent per year through 2009 and reach 900 million sq uare yards. Declines will be more moderate than in the previous five-year period due in part to production of denim, which su stains the segment. Cotton sheeting demand is projected to increase 1.9 percent per year between 2 004 and 20 09 to 640 million squ are yards.
