...Venezuela is a federal republic with a directly elected president, currently Hugo Chavez of the Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV). A radical left-winger, Mr Chavez has been in power since February 1999. He has been re-elected twice, in 2000 and 2006. He has also survived an attempted coup (in early 2002) and a revocatory referendum (in August 2004). In the wake of an opposition boycott of the December 2005 legislative election, Mr Chavez's party has total control of the 167-seat unicameral National Assembly (parliament). However, Mr Chavez was defeated in a public referendum on constitutional reform (which included plans to permit indefinite presidential re-election) in December 2007, marking his first defeat in a national poll since taking office. Indicating a further erosion of public support, he lost ground in local and regional elections in November 2008. Mr Chavez survives several attempts to remove him from power.
