...The UK is a stable parliamentary democracy. Elections to the House of Commons (parliament's directly elected chamber) are held at least every five years. The centre-left Labour Party has been in government since May 1997, when it returned to office after 18 years of uninterrupted rule by the right-of-centre Conservative Party. Labour has since been re-elected in 2001 and in 2005. The prime minister is Gordon Brown, who replaced Tony Blair in June 2007. The current head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952. The monarch plays a largely ceremonial role (such as opening parliamentary sessions) and takes care not to opine publicly on controversial political matters. The UK consists of four distinct nations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The first three territories constitute what is otherwise known as Great Britain.
