...The political scene underwent dramatic change in 2006, with the military launching a coup (the country's 18th since the absolute monarchy was abolished in 1932) in September of that year. The military ousted the government of Thaksin Shinawatra, which had recorded the unprecedented feat of staying in office for a full four-year term (2001-05). Thaksin's party, Thai Rak Thai (TRT), had also succeeded in forming the first-ever single-party government following the election in 2005. After more than a year of military rule, following an election in December 2007, a new government, led by the pro-Thaksin People Power Party (PPP), was voted into office. Thaksin enjoys spectacular rise to power. Thaksin and his TRT party won a historic victory in January 2001 in the first general election under new electoral laws. The TRT, formed less than two years earlier, mounted an aggressive populist campaign that captured the public's mood and won 248 seats in the 500-seat House of Representatives. For the...
