...Sri Lanka couples a parliamentary democracy with a powerful directly elected executive presidency. Clashes between the prime minister and president have been especially common when the two offices are controlled by different parties, but the presidency tends to prevail. The current president, Mahinda Rajapakse of the People's Alliance (PA), was elected in 2005. The PA is also by far the largest element within the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, which won the last parliamentary elections in 2004. The next parliamentary election is due by October 2010, and the next presidential election is due in 2011. The UNF government agrees a ceasefire with the LTTE. The agreement, signed in February 2002, committed the two sides to returning conflict-affected regions in the north and east to a state of relative normality, including by removing mines and restrictions on transport.
