...Romania is a parliamentary democracy, and has a bicameral parliament comprised of the Senate (the upper house, with 137 seats) and the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house, with 334 seats), which are elected for four-year terms. The head of state is the president, currently Traian Basescu, who serves a five-year term. As of December 2008, Romania has a coalition government comprising the centre-right Democratic Liberal Party (DLP)--the party of the prime minister, Emil Boc--and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP). The president's five-year term ends in 2009 and the next parliamentary election is due in late 2012. Former communists are defeated in the 2004 election, amid scandals. In 2000-04 the SDP, then known as the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PSDR), formed a minority government supported by the HUDR, which oversaw Romania's entrance into NATO.
