...Fundamental to the understanding of Malaysia's political development is an appreciation of its geographical, ethnic and cultural diversity. Political parties are largely based on ethnicity, locality or religion. The basic themes of post-war political history have been the maintenance of racial harmony, positive discrimination in favour of the bumiputera ("sons of the soil"-- ethnic Malays and other indigenous peoples) and friction between Islamist parties and the government. Since independence in 1957, Malaysia has been ruled by coalition governments dominated by the principal Malay party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). However, the dominance of UMNO and the authority of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government are being challenged by the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat (PR), which won an unprecedented 82 parliamentary seats (out of 222) in the March 2008 election.
