...An early election was held in April 2008 following the collapse of the left-of-centre government led by Romano Prodi. The right-of-centre coalition led by Silvio Berlusconi secured a clear victory, which translated into a comfortable parliamentary majority. Mr Berlusconi's coalition government formed in May comprises the Popolo della Liberta (PDL), which is made up mainly of his party, Forza Italia (FI), and the Alleanza Nazionale (AN), as well as the regionalist parties, the Lega Nord in the north and the Movimento per l'Autonomia in the south. In the mid-1990s Italy moved towards a bipolar political system, dominated by two unstable coalitions: the right-of-centre alliance led by Mr Berlusconi and a broad left-of-centre coalition led by Mr Prodi, an academic economist and former chief executive of a state-owned holding company.
