...Hungary is a parliamentary democracy that has been led by alternating centre-right and centre-left governments since the end of communist rule in 1990. A parliamentary election was held in April 2006 and resulted in the incumbent coalition, comprising the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) and the SZDSZ-Hungarian Liberal Party (SZDSZ), gaining a comfortable majority in parliament. The two parties renewed their coalition agreement following the election--these two parties were in power in 2002-06 and also co-operated in government in 1994-98. However, disagreements over reforms resulted in the SZDSZ leaving the government in April 2008, with the MSZP likely to rule as a minority administration. The head of state is the president, currently Laszlo Solyom, who was elected by parliament for a five-year term on June 7th 2005. However, power rests mainly with parliament....
