Founded as the Charleston Gas Light Company by a group of progressive executives in 1846, SCANA Corp. incorporated in Delaware and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1984. SCANA is a diversified holding company headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. The company's core business focuses on the production, distribution, and sale of electricity and natural gas. Through its subsidiaries, SCANA provides services to more than one million natural gas customers in three southeastern states, in addition to providing electricity to over 550,000 customers in South Carolina. The holding company serves 639,300 electricity customers and 302,500 gas customers in the neighboring states through utilities South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) and Public Service Company of North Carolina (operating as PSNC Energy). SCANA has an electric generating capacity of about 4,900 MW, which derived mainly from fossil-fueled power plants; it also operates hydroelectric and nuclear generation facilities. Other operations include retail and wholesale energy marketing and trading, gas transportation, power plant management, fiber-optic telecommunications services, and appliance and HVAC maintenance.
