Abstract:This report is focused on the pharmaceutical production and distribution sectors in 2007 and provides estimates for market developments in 2008. The analysis covers both aggregated data and individual performance of key market players. The report also reviews mergers and acquisitions and main changes in the regulatory framework, including the role of the state budget allocations in the sector. In the field of drug production, the two biggest companies Sopharma and Actavis Bulgaria are expanding sales at quick pace but following different development strategies. Sopharma is expected to grow at a quicker pace due to its aggressive expansion through acquisitions in Eastern Europe while Actavis Bulgaria is launching a large number of new over-thecounter products on the local market that are manufactured in various units of its parent company Actavis Group. Sopharma is thus growing on the back of export sales while Actavis is benefiting from imports mainly. Although the domestic pharmaceutical market in 2007 achieved a sound growth of 11.8% in nominal retail terms, legislative impediments in regard to pricing and trade regulations raise concerns for a slowdown in 2008. The main problems are linked to regulations of retail trade with drugs and state-financed transactions for reimbursements of drugs and healthcare services.
