| Abstract: | Outlook for the tourism sector in Poland remains good. Growing number of foreign tourists as well as rising activity of Polish tourists, rising income of inhabitants and, finally, the European football finals which are going to be hosted by Poland in 2012 are factors that should drive the sector up in the coming years. The number of inbound tourists should grow from 15.7mn in 2007 to 19mn in 2012 and 2013, according to the forecasts of the Polish Institute of Tourism. That means an average growth rate of 2.7% annually. Also, foreign tourists' spending is on the rise. This should at least partly be attributed to medical tourism. The number of foreign trips taken by Poles rebounded in 2006 (7.3mn vs. 6.2mn a year before) and the rise continued in 2007 (the number reached 7.7mn). Not surprisingly, the number of tour operators registered in Poland grew to 2839 in 2007 from 2689 in 2006. According to the Institute of Tourism (IT), the Polish hotel industry is heading for bright future. The IT expects that in 2012 the hotels and guest houses in Poland will accommodate 5mn tourists more than in 2007. It is expected that in the coming 5 years the value of hotel construction will be growing at an average rate of 17% annually to finally reach PLN 1.1bn (EUR 305mn) in 2012. As for the restaurants, Poles currently spend on eating out about 5% of their budget earmarked for food and this share is expected to grow further in the coming years. The growth potential seems huge. In comparison, in Germany, this share amounts to 35% and in the US ? 50%. According to Euromonitor International, spending on restaurants will be growing by 6-7% annually. This results not only from growing income of Poles, but also from changing habits. |
