Develops novel drugs using complex, natural carbohydrates that may have physiologic activity. Complex carbohydrates, already known to function as structural materials, energy reserves, adhesives and lubricants, are also thought to play a significant role in intercellular events and receptor biochemistry. Using proprietary technologies for synthesis, manipulation, screening, and commercial-scale production, the Company develops new commercial applications for complex carbohydrates. Beginning with bioactive complex carbohydrates, the Company has designed and synthesized small analogs which can occupy or 'block' the target receptor sites by attaching to the protein on the endothelial lining, thus preventing white blood cells from being able to attach to the blood vessel.
