...Most segments of the insurance industry are starting 2018 at an inflection point. Property-casualty insurers will soon be reporting fourth quarter 2017 results and for many, record breaking catastrophe losses will hurt profitability. However, most p-c insurers have adequate capital levels to withstand these losses, which should help propel premium rates upward, particularly in storm- ravaged areas. Reinsurers, however, are not faring as well. The January 2018 policy renewal season is kicking off and early indications are that the industry remains awash in excess capacity, which is preventing premium rates from rising very much. Life insurers enter 2018 with a mixed set of circumstances. They are set to benefit from a still buoyant economy and labor market, which should continue to drive demand for savings and retirement products, while a rising interest rate environment should help margins in spreads-based businesses, like annuities.
