...Uncertainty over the scope of regulatory reform and the magnitude of interest-rate hikes has replaced previous optimism in those areas so far in 2017. As a result, many insurance stocks have underperformed the broader market, year to date through June 30, 2017. This follows a year of outperformance in 2016 when insurance stocks--particularly those of life insurers--soared in the aftermath of Donald Trump s surprise presidential victory, and rose 20.8% last year. Year to date through June 30, 2017, property & casualty insurers have been the best performing insurance underwriting group, rising 11.4% due to some improved company-specific performance, while the insurance brokers sub-industry was the best performing insurance sub-industry, rising 15.7%. During this same period, the S&P Composite 1500 index rose 7.8%; life & health and multi-line insurance stocks lagged the broader market, rising 5.2% and 0.2%, respectively.
