...Severe weather reared its ugly head in September of 2017, with Hurricanes and severe storms grounding thousands of flights and leading to hundreds of millions of dollars in losses for U.S. Airlines. Most affected were United, American and Southwest. While weather is a part of the business, these storms were much more severe than usual. Thankfully, there was little lasting damage to airports or aircraft, so the losses airlines endured are likely to be a one-time issue, until 2018 s crop of storms (severe winter weather and hurricanes in the summer) pop up. Notable customer service failures in 2017 thrust the U.S. airlines industry into the spotlight in both social and traditional media, with all major airlines and some smaller ones feeling the brunt of customer outrage at airline policies and procedures.
